A Statement from the Broadway Eldership on Oneness in Christ

Dear Broadway family,

This past Sunday (Sept 9, 2018), the Elders of the Broadway Church of Christ made a special announcement at the end of worship outlining our beliefs about the roles of both men and women in ministry here at Broadway.  We know that some of you were not able to be at worship and we wanted to be sure everyone in our church had a chance to hear directly from us.  Below is the statement we read in it’s entirety:

We, your Elders here at Broadway, are in a season of prayer and study focusing on unity in Christ. We look around the world and see so much division. Division by race. Division by economic status. Division by gender. However, as the people of God, followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to Oneness.

Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, wrote: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave or free, nor is there male and female, for you all are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28) In other words, there is neither race, nor economic status, nor gender – we are all one in Christ.

So what does that look like in this body called Broadway? I want to read a short statement that the Elders have adopted unanimously that addresses one of those division points.

  • We believe that God created all human beings as equals in worth and status.
  • We believe He gifted men and women to serve in His church, in His mission to heal, redeem, and to bring justice and mercy.
  • We believe that both men and women are equipped to serve the church, using the gifts God has given them.
  • We believe that God calls women and men to teach and serve in His kingdom as human beings created in His image.
  • The power of the curse of sin is broken in Christ. We are called to live as those redeemed by the Grace of God.

Now we invite you to join us in this season of prayer and study to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in what this looks like in this body called Broadway. We ask for your prayers, for your open heart for study, for your spirit of grace, and for your loving desire for Oneness.  As we continue to: pursue God, build community, and unleash compassion.

Your Elders invite you to join us for an important and significant conversation about Oneness in Christ on October 12-13.  During this Friday evening and Saturday conference we have invited Dr. Ken Cukrowski, Dean of the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University, to come help us explore what Scripture says when it comes to men and women serving in the body of Christ.  We hope that you will bring your Bible, your questions, and a ready heart as we examine and consider how God is calling us forward, together.

We thank God for each of you, for your partnership in the gospel, your love for Broadway, and your eager desire to know Christ more fully.  May He bless us all as we journey together into the future.

Sincerely,

The Broadway Elders
